An example of an expansion of a pre-existing layout, the three-card spread can be expanded into a nine-card spread by using three layers of three cards each and designating each layer as past, present, or future.

Begin by identifying exactly what it is you want to know and what you want the spread to convey. Then organize those issues into an ordered plan, marking each card's position according to what it will signify. By doing this, you are telling your unconscious that you want specific answers to your questions, and you are determining the method you will use to access the information you seek.

Let's say a person has had an auto accident and thinks there is some deeper reason than bad driving for what's happened. This individual wants to explore that issue in depth by consulting the Tarot. By having a dialogue with the readee, you go through a process of clarification by asking questions, such as “What role is this accident playing in my life now?”; “How did 1 participate in this accident?”; “What purpose are the accident and its results serving in my life?”; “Why did I have this accident?”; “What am I getting out of having had this accident?”; “Am I avoiding something by having had an accident?”; and so forth.

You then organize the questions into a card plan. Draw your layout and designate a card position that corresponds to each question. Number the card positions on the plan. You decide how many cards to use, depending on how many questions or facets of the issue you wish to have answered. Then choose a layout pattern that appeals to both you and the person for whom the reading is being done. The visual pattern of the spread can be varied according to your personal inclinations: Some people work best with linear shapes, others with circular patterns, and still others with rectangles or star shapes. You can combine both your concept and your aesthetic sense in the layout, for this invites your intuition to speak through it.

As you order the questions and place the card positions in the plan, you may decide to drop some questions and add others. Include the readee in the entire process. You might, for example, want to add to the above list such questions as, “What are the past influences that led to the accident?” and/or, “How will this accident affect my future?”

You can also design multipurpose spreads that can be used to address a wide range of issues and questions. Base them on your personal belief system or a special interest, if you like. Use your creativity, experiment, and have fun!
